He was eating an apple, and giving a long, melodious whoop, at intervals, followed by a deep-toned ding-dong-dong, ding-dong-dong, for he was personating a steamboat. As he drew near, he slackened speed, took the middle of the street, leaned far over to starboard and rounded to ponderously and with laborious pomp and circumstance—for he was personating the Big Missouri, and considered himself to be drawing nine feet of water. He was boat and captain and engine-bells combined, so he had to imagine himself standing on his own hurricane-deck giving the orders and executing them:

现在正是黎明时分，空气清凉，晨光熹微，树林笼罩在深沉的静谧中，透出一种恬适怡人的甜美气息。没有一片叶子颤动，没有一种声音打搅大自然的沉思。树叶和青草上缀着成串的露珠，篝火上覆盖着白色的灰烬，一律蓝烟袅袅飘向天空。

哈克在附近找到一股清冽的泉水，几根人用宽大的橡树叶或胡桃叶做成杯子，觉得大森林醉人的清香，使这泉水喝起来格外甘甜爽口，足可以替代咖啡。

汤姆自忖，这世界原来并不那么坏。他不知不觉中发现了一条重要的人类行为法则——为了使一个人或者一个孩子喜欢一样东西，只要让这件东西难以得到就行了。

他得了重病，即将死去。姨妈俯身乞求他说一点原谅她的话。可他把脸扭过去对着墙，到死也没原谅她。啊，她会怎么想呢？

他又想像自己在河里淹死了，让人捞出来送回了家，头发在滴着水，一颗受伤的心停止了跳动。她扑在他身上，眼泪像雨水一样哗啦啦淌下来，嘴里嚷着，乞求上帝把孩子还给她。她再也不会责骂他了。但是，他就会一动不动躺在那里，脸色惨白，什么表情也没有——成了个可怜的受难者，得到个悲剧的结局。

That put the thing in a new light. Ben stopped nibbling his apple. Tom swept his brush daintily back and forth—stepped back to note the effect—added a touch here and there—criticised the effect again—Ben watching every move and getting more and more interested, more and more absorbed. Presently he said:

"Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little."

Tom considered, was about to consent; but he altered his mind:

"No—no—I reckon it wouldn't hardly do, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly's awful particular about this fence—right here on the street, you know—but if it was the back fence I wouldn't mind and she wouldn't. Yes, she's awful particular about this fence; it's got to be done very careful; I reckon there ain't one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it the way it's got to be done." ...

Now Tom began to scrawl something on the slate, hiding the words from the girl. But she was not backward this time. She begged to see. Tom said:

"Oh, it ain't anything."

"Yes it is."

"No it ain't. You don't want to see."

"Yes I do, indeed I do. Please let me."

"You'll tell."

"No I won't—deed and deed and double deed won't."

"You won't tell anybody at all? Ever, as long as you live?"

"No, I won't ever tell anybody. Now let me."

"Oh, you don't want to see!"

"Now that you treat me so, I will see." And she put her small hand upon his and a little scuffle ensued, Tom pretending to resist in earnest but letting his hand slip by degrees till these words were revealed: "I love you."

"Oh, you bad thing!" And she hit his hand a smart rap, but reddened and looked pleased, nevertheless.

一次,他与哈克为了一点微予其微的小事跑到墓地中去。无意间,他们目睹了一幕恐怖的杀人事件。但凶手却嫁祸给哈波,于是,愤怒的居民们将被冤枉的哈波抓了起来。审判哈波的日子一天一天逼近,汤姆不禁犹豫了:说吧,又怕杀人不眨眼的乔将他杀掉;不说吧,他的良心正受着无比的煎熬。最后,汤姆决定在法庭上证明一切。这是杀人案,况且,当时，人犯乔也在场,他就不怕乔吗?说不怕都是假的,但汤姆有超强的正义感,所以他オ不顾一切救哈波,要还他清白。

汤姆就是这样的坚定果敢,富有良知和正义感,关键时他总能挺身而出,把自我的生死之置于度外。我被汤姆的举动深深震撼了。

其实，儿童是最天真无邪的。我们应该让自己始终持续一颗童心，拥有正义感和善良的本性，用真诚的心对待每一个人，不要再那么贪婪、自私了！
